Job Summary:

Under general supervision, duties will include performing a variety of technical and entry level professional wildlife work in support of biologists and project administrators conducting various field work, with emphasis on wildlife habitat and plant identification.

Job Duties:

Conducting cactus surveys, grassland plant surveys, vegetation community mapping, rare plant identification, invasive plant identification, leading botany field crew, collecting and summarizing survey data, data management, assisting in project implementation, coordinating with partners, report writing, and providing field support for various other projects as needed. In addition, duties will include assisting in performing standardized wildlife surveys for a variety of Arizona fauna (e.g., Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Southwestern Willow Flycatchers, etc.). Assignments will require extended periods (4-8 days) working and residing in primitive field conditions in the Arizona summer. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

The candidate will have knowledge of wildlife science; Arizona plant identification; job-related federal, state, and agency regulations, policies, and procedures; and scientific data collection procedures. Skills include survey, capture, handling, and marking of wildlife. The candidate will be able to use a variety of field equipment (e.g. GPS units, tablets, Survey 123 app, cameras) and must be able to communicate effectively. The candidate will be able to conduct plant (primary) and animal (secondary) surveys during all times of the day and year, including hiking in midday summer desert conditions. The candidate will have the ability to interact with the public and apply public relations, work alone and as part of a team, and hike, backpack and/or camp overnight for extended periods of time in hot environments.

The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
