The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3/4 position located in Tok!


**Classification Review Notice**

What you will be doing:

This position serves as the Wildlife Technician for the Tok area which includes Game Management Units 12 and 20E. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining the Tok area office, grounds and equipment, working with the Tok program technician to provide hunting and fishing information services to the public, assisting with nuisance wildlife, sealing hides, horns and skulls, assisting the Tok area and assistant area biologists with wildlife survey and inventory and hunt management activities, and organize and provide written summaries of information and data collected during these activities.

The working conditions you can expect:
This position is located in Tok Alaska, a small community of approximately 1200 people on the Alaska Highway in east-central Alaska. The office has a total staff of 4 with beautiful views of the Alaska Range near the Tanana River. Duties vary day to day, including flying moose surveys in a supercub, attending public advisory meetings, issuing permits or answering hunting and fishing questions in the Tok office information center, organizing, sumarizing and inputing data into a cpmputer spreadsheet, working on equipment, building and grounds maitnanance in and around the office or traveling on a remote trail in the fall contacting hunters in the field. There is always something new to keep the job interesting. The area also offers exceptional personal opportunities to pursue a variety of outdoor activities.



Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking, and qualified candidate that possesses some or all of the following position-specific competencies:
  • Experience participating in aerial wildlife surveys and big game capture projects; including use of radio telemetry equipment, collecting, organizing, and summarizing data from these projects, flying in small aircraft, assisting in the collection of biological measurements and samples from immobilized or harvested wildlife and coordinating logistics for field projects.
  • Experience living and working in rural Alaska.
  • Experience working with the public in the field and in the office, especially hunters, trappers, and rural Alaskans, with a variety of personality types, including angry or upset individuals, issuing hunting licenses and permits, and sealing game hides, horns, and skulls.
  • Experience using computers and computer software, especially Microsoft Word and Excel, to conduct routine biological data entry, simple analysis, and output.
  • Knowledge of or experience with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations, and explaining these regulations to the public.

Special Note:
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • This position requires field work which can involve exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying in airplanes and helicopters, travel by boat or skiff, and contact with drugs and chemicals used to immobilize wildlife.
  • This position routinely travels to remote areas for field work that could last from a couple of days to several weeks.


Minimum Qualifications

Fish and Wildlife Technician 3:
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.


Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.


Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.


Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.


Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.



Fish and Wildlife Technician 4:
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
