The Role:
Overview:
The Assistant Controller is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting, reconciliation, and financial reporting activities of the organization. This leader will support the development and maintenance of accounting practices and procedures to ensure compliant, accurate, and timely financial reporting for RPA and its sponsored projects and donor-advised funds.
Reports to: Controller
Location: New York City or remote in the US
Team: Responsible for supervision of a team of GL and Payroll Accountants.
Key Responsibilities:
Controls And Compliance
- Partnering with the Controller and CFO, the Assistant Controller assists with the design, implementation, management, and maintenance of internal controls and financial policies and procedures to ensure compliant, accurate, and timely financial reporting for RPA and its sponsored projects and donor-advised funds.
Audit & Regulatory Filings
- Serves as the staff liaison for the external audit and assists with the preparation of the audited financials and annual Form 990 filing, gathering information, and preparing the detailed audit worksheet analysis for the year-end audit.
- Responsible for assisting with regulatory compliance and deadlines associated with tax, audit, and Federal/State filings such as Form 1099 production, Uniform Guidance audits, and the production of the Form 990 tax return.
Accounting Management
- Oversees revenue accounting, , payroll accounting, investment allocations, and fee assessments.
- A hands-on manager responsible for the review of all accounting transactions posted to the general ledger.
- Holds signatory responsibility.
Information & Business Advice
- Serves as a resource to the organization on finance and accounting content knowledge and best practices and provides financial education to the finance team and the broader organization.
Financial Reporting
- Supports the accurate and timely dissemination of financial reports including internal and external monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Manages and maintains a strict deadline to close the financial activities of the month, including the preparation and analysis of the monthly balance sheet and statement of activities. Reviews monthly, quarterly and annual reconciliation of all accounts.
- Guides and trains others on achieving full compliance with applicable rules and regulations in management and/or operations.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Responsible for supervision of a team of GL and Payroll Accountants

Professional Experience:
- Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required, including budget development, financial reporting, GAAP, cash management, nonprofit finance and accounting regulations (including fiscal sponsorship), business taxes, banking, and debt financing instruments.
- Knowledge of accounting systems and systems implementations is a plus.
- Ability to effectively communicate accounting and finance concepts to non-finance partners and staff.
- Familiarity with grantmaking, charitable funds, or fiscal sponsorship preferred.
- An understanding of the broad spectrum of private philanthropy, including trends in giving and key issues for individual, family, institutional and corporate donors.
Skills & Competencies:
- Ability to build strong relationships cross-functionally, demonstrating strong collaboration skills and the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively across teams and cultures.
- Personal qualities of integrity and credibility; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO the responsibility for accounting operations and lead the team.
- Keen analytic, organizational, and problem-solving skills including strategic data interpretation, risk identification and remediation; an appreciation of how the accounting function fits into the broader institutional context.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data.
- Ability to build a strong team: commitment to recruiting, training, developing and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly and operate an effective, high-performing team.

Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
- CPA certification required.
Travel Requirements:
- Some travel may be required.
Compensation:
- We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment.
- For this position, the salary is $160,000 to $170,000. Internal equity considerations and the average salary of the peer range will be reviewed before making a final offer.
