Summary of Position:

Grow Pittsburgh is seeking an Assistant Manager at Braddock Farms for the 2024 season. This is a 40 hour/ week seasonal position (non permanent) primarily focused on growing and caring for crops as well as harvesting and packing them for markets. Braddock Farm’s aim is to support growers and communities through providing education, resources and neighborhood assets that connect people to each other, land and food. 

The Assistant Manager will work closely with the Braddock Farm Manager to ensure farm operations go smoothly.

Site Location: Braddock Farms, located at Braddock Avenue and 10th Street, Braddock, PA 15104

Responsibilities:

General

  • Assist the Senior Farm Manager with developing weekly tasks for on-site workdays 
  • Following Direction from the Senior Farm Manager, Teach weekly agricultural lessons to Pre-apprentice cohort with corresponding on-site work, when cohort is in session
  • Following direction from the Senior Farm Manager, teach workshare volunteers how to harvest and perform daily farm tasks
  • Provide additional supervision and teaching to High School Youth interns and Crew Leaders
  • Farm lead when the Senior Farm Manager is unavailable. 
  • Communicate with the public in a professional, friendly and welcoming manner. 

Education

  • Work with youth in our UFIT program
  • Maintain a positive learning environment for seasonal staff 
  • Leading lessons, tours, volunteers as needed. 
  • Teach farm and garden related classes to the public, including Grow Pittsburgh’s workshop series, by desire and availability

Production

  • Seed starting and caring for the greenhouse 
  • Cultivation and weed control
  • Planting and sowing crops 
  • Regular tasks include: harvest/wash/packing produce, caring for berries, trellising crops, irrigation, preparing fields for planting. 
  • Filling in for farm stand staffing when needed

There will be some small construction projects in the early spring that will be worked on. Farm work can vary throughout the season. 

Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, with required special events (two Saturdays during the season).This is a 9-month position starting March 11th, 2024, and ending on November 1st, 2024.

Qualifications, Skills & Requirements:

  • One full season of growing experience on a vegetable farm is required. 
  • Self-motivated, punctual and should enjoy working with people. 
  • Possess a strong work ethic, 
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Detail oriented, ability to work efficiently and independently. 
  • We are a public facing farm so we expect all staff to be courteous and professional when interacting with the public. 
  • Must be able to work occasional Saturdays and special events
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. 
  • Must submit Pennsylvania child abuse clearances (Act 33 and Act 34) prior to employment 

Braddock Farms Details: Approximately one acre in size, Braddock Farms is Grow Pittsburgh’s largest food production site. 2024 will be our 17th growing season. We grow vegetables and berries using natural methods. There are four hoop houses and a greenhouse on the farm. In addition to the Senior Farm Manager we have an Assistant Manager, Wash Pack Lead and the Peak Season worker, a Farm Stand coordinator, a workshare program and host volunteer groups. Our primary outlets for our produce are through: our on site Farm Store (open three days a week), another Grow Pittsburgh farm stand at Shiloh Farm, neighborhood markets including: Wilkinsburg and Homewood. The farm hosts educational workshops and tours as well as the Urban Farmers in Training program with local youth. We host fun events every year with our annual Zucchini Festival (July) and Fall Festival (October). 

 

Compensation: $20/hour; Other benefits include: healthcare stipend, paid sick days, mileage reimbursement for work use of vehicle and membership to the Garden Resource Center.
