Dean of Asian American/Asian Research Institute

POSITION DETAILS

GENERAL DUTIES

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs of Queens College, AAARI (Asian American/Asian Research Institute) is a CUNY-wide Institute whose mission is to facilitate and disseminate research, scholarship, and educational materials on issues that are relevant to Asia, Asian America, and other Asian diasporas, including timely concerns pertaining to New York’s diverse integrated communities of Asian descent. AAARI is an intellectual hub that serves as a bridge between CUNY and Asian American/Asian communities in New York City and beyond. The Dean leads, visions, and oversees the day-to-day and the long-term functioning of the Institute, ensuring its visibility, viability, and leadership in Asian American/Asian studies scholarship, advocacy, and outreach.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

AAARI is headquartered in Manhattan’s renowned Bryant Park area, with convenient public transit access to CUNY’s central offices and to Queens College, which is AAARI’s administrative home. The Dean is normally expected to be on-site in Manhattan or other locations as warranted on a full-time basis. We envision AAARI as the pre-eminent Asian American/Asian research and advocacy entity on the East Coast of the United States. AAARI is a hub for vibrant intellectual collaborations at Queens College and across CUNY among faculty in Asian American/Asian studies and relevant academic areas through outreach to Asian American/Asian communities at CUNY and the greater New York City area to support and develop AAARI’s role as an entity that bridges the university and community.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Engage in collaboration with community and CUNY partners in strategic planning to identify, execute, and assess AAARI’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.
  2. Develop and maintain robust academic, pre-professional, and extracurricular engagement opportunities for students and faculty, particularly those identifying as or studying in areas cognate to Asian American/Asian studies including language and culture, the arts, public health, urban studies, entrepreneurship, etc.
  3. Identify and secure external funding in support of AAARI’s academic and non-academic strategic goals, including funding from Federal sources (Department of Education, NSF, NEH, etc.) as well as corporations, foundations, City and State, as well as other appropriate external funding sources in alignment with CUNY’s stated expectations for Institutes.
  4. Build positive and collaborative relationships with political leadership in the greater New York City area and nationally, to support and enhance the effectiveness of AAARI’s advocacy.
  5. Provide leadership and guidance in outreach efforts to the Queens community and support services for Queens College students, as well as coordinate the work of a Program Coordinator in curating general programming, scholarly materials, and other resources for the University and community.
  6. Lead the sustained assessment and documentation of AAARI’s activities and impact, per criteria articulated by CUNY and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, including annual reporting and periodic recertification.
  7. Engage in regular professional development to maintain currency, enhance leadership skills, and keep abreast of developments in the field.
  8. Build, manage, and develop an AAARI professional staff that works together to ensure the smooth functioning of the Institute and to elevate the presence of AAARI.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and eight years of related experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  1. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree (or relevant terminal degree) and an academic background suitable for an underlying appointment as a full professor in an appropriate academic department at Queens College.
  2. The successful candidate should have a suitable academic background for engaging in, providing a guiding vision for, critically reviewing, and evaluating research.
  3. The successful candidate should have substantial knowledge of issues of concern to the Asian American community.
  4. A working knowledge of an Asian language is a desired ability, not required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary range: $190,000 - $210,000 commensurate with education and experience.
