Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Clinic Executive Director, the Ophthalmologist is responsible for providing high-quality eye care services by diagnosing patient conditions using, but not limited to, analyzing reports, test results, medical records, including examinations to diagnose the condition of patients and proposing treatment options.

Native Preference

Native Preference in hiring is given to qualified enrolled members of Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians and Native Americans in accordance with the Bands Preference Policy, Chapter 1-715 of the Tribal Policies. Applicants claiming Indian Preference must submit verification of Indian heritage certified by tribe of affiliation or other acceptable documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Examine the eyes of patients of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality or vision defects.
  • Provide routine care such as vision testing and prescribing glasses and contact lenses.
  • Perform corrective surgeries, such as repairing injuries and corneas, and removing cataracts.
  • Manage chronic conditions such as Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Dry Eyes, among others.
  • Read retinal scans and participate in developing clinic protocols to ensure quality eye care.
  • Certify legally blind patients and manage mental disorders affecting vision.
  • Prescribe medications, analyze reports, and refer to specialists when necessary.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all health information privacy laws.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities and department policy development.
  • Supervise and oversee department staff and provide outpatient care to clinic patients.
  • Maintain licensure, certifications, and stay current with clinical practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (M.D.) in Ophthalmology
  • Completion of a residency in Ophthalmology
  • Valid California State Physician and Surgeon License
  • Board Certified or eligible in Ophthalmology
  • Current DEA license and certifications (CPR, PALS, ACLS)
  • Experience with eye examination tools
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently and in teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in a community clinic
  • Experience with electronic medical records systems
  • Leadership skills and bilingual in Spanish
