Position Summary:
Education through Music seeks a full-time Music Teacher Intern Supervisor to provide effective instructional supervision as part of a new initiative supporting music teacher workforce development beginning in January 2024. The Intern Supervisor will provide guidance, support, and continuous assessment and feedback to music teachers interns for their professional development and improvement in the teaching-learning process. The IS will assist with the management of program implementation, evaluation, and intern recruitment, and contribute to ETM's professional development knowledge base, resources and overall music teacher training capabilities.
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions which must be performed/completed to achieve the objectives of this position:
On-Site School Visits:
- On-site visits to mentor music teachers interns as needed or directed (average 2 visits per month).
- Develop, maintain and document relationships with school principals via check-in visits.
- Guide music teachers interns on navigating school environments and assimilating into school culture.
- Document details of school visits and what was accomplished at such visits.
- Document music teacher interns activities formally and informally through on-site observations focused on lesson planning, pedagogy, classroom management, classroom environment, age-appropriate content, integration, and assessment.
- Videotape and observe music teachers interns' instruction and provide written and verbal feedback.
- Conduct model teaching and team teaching as necessary.
Instructional Support:
- Assist in the onboarding of music teacher interns.
- Provide support to music teacher interns in classroom management, music pedagogy, principal and parent communication.
- Guide and train music teacher interns in developing musical activities, lesson plans, curriculum, assessments strategies and producing performances based on ETM benchmarks and ETM training materials and consistent with ETM's DEI policies and values.
- Review music teachers interns' lesson plans weekly before lessons are taught and provide feedback.
- Facilitate and attend performances and events including Breakfast With The Band/Orchestra, and community performances.
- Facilitate professional development sessions for interns and music teachers.
Grant Implementation/Operation Support:
- Contribute to the planning process for the implementation of the full internship process.
- Meet weekly with Associate Programs Director to give updates regarding intern program.
- Work with the Chief of Staff and external evaluator in the planning and execution of the assessment of the program.
Supervisory Support:
- Ensure proper supervision, mentoring and Performance evaluation of all ETM music teachers interns.
- Communicate and support the mentor music teachers in supporting the music teacher intern in their classroom through regular weekly check-ins and classroom visits.
- Communicate with partner principals with regular updates regarding the intern program at their school.
- Review semi-monthly time records in Paylocity for accuracy and follow up on any discrepancies.
- Manage/Approve time off requests.
- Conduct regular performance check-ins to ensure Intern is on track and to discuss any concerns.
- Compile and administer (in conjunction with Human Resources and APD) Performance Improvement Plans as needed.
- Track professional development attendance and ensure all music teachers interns receive required training.
Intern Recruitment:
- Attend career/recruiting events to promote/recruit Interns for ETM.
- Conduct face to face interview and recommend applicants for demos.
- Participate in Group Demo Sessions to identify potential Music Teacher Intern candidates.
- Collaborate with HR on sourcing, hiring and retaining diverse candidates by learning interviewing strategies aimed at increasing all aspects of diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Participate in the placement of interns into schools.
Administrative Support (For Spring 2024 Only):
- Support with ETM sub pool management.
- Support with the organization of ETM Media Release Forms.
- Support with the organization and sharing of curriculum and professional development content.
Requirements:
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Regular local travel is required to visit ETM partner school locations within the five boroughs of New York City
- Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related Music field
- 5-7 years of primary or secondary classroom music teaching experience
- Expertise in a choir, string orchestra, or band
- Vocal/instrumental performance capabilities
- Musical theory and notation literacy
- Understanding of music pedagogy, educational theory, and child development
- Knowledge of specific musical repertoire and genres
- Knowledge of curriculum design and pedagogic methodology
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Computer literate, including MS Office Suite
- 1-2 years of Supervisory experience (not students)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree
- Seven years of primary or secondary classroom teaching experience (preferably in an urban setting)
- Staff/project management experience
- Experience teaching in both general music and instrumental ensemble (band/orchestra.)
- Advanced vocal or instrumental performance capabilities, particularly string instruments, piano, and vocal
- Choral/instrumental conducting
- Advanced practical understanding of music pedagogy, educational theory, and child development
- Additional certifications i.e..; Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, and/or other music teaching pedagogies
Hiring is contingent upon the candidate receiving security clearance from the New York City Department of Education.
The salary range for this position is $62,000-$67,000.
