HISTORY
Shaver Transportation Company was founded by George W. Shaver in 1880. The Shaver family continues to own and manage the business today. Captain Steve Shaver serves as President and Chairman of the Board. Steve's sister, Samantha Shaver is a Board Member and VP of Marketing. Steve's daughter, Rickie Shaver, who serves as the Purchasing Manager, and Ashley who serves as the Administrative Assistant, represents the sixth generation of Shavers at the Company. Together with our employees Shaver has grown into a regional tug and barge company with a fleet of 15 tugs and 20 barges. Shaver is the oldest continuously operating family-owned company on the west coast. We focus our efforts on four lines of business: ship assist, bulk commodity transportation, harbor/marine services, and emergency response and rescue.

SCHEDULED HOURS
Each employee at Shaver Transportation is assigned one of the following shifts.
UN-SCHEDULED "Call Out" WORK
The workload at Shaver is blind to the clock and calendar. We have to have our tugs crewed and in position to assist vessels, often with very little notice. It is essential that we have a significant portion of our crew able to respond on short notice for this "call out" work. This work is paid a minimum of 4 hours overtime pay.
DOUBLE CREW and INTERMITTENT DOUBLE CREW
Double crewed tugs are scheduled to work week on/week off (up to 7-day trips) with two Captains and two Deckhands. For each day aboard the vessel the employee earns a day off, therefore these employees do not work single crew.
The other type of live aboard tug is the Intermittent Double Crew, known as IDC. An IDC tug is also crewed with two Captains and two Deckhands. The start of crewing can be any day of the week and the duration will not last beyond seven days, unless the crew agrees to extend the trip an additional day.
PAY
The seniority rate of pay for the Deckhand position is currently $41.39 per hour. During training the pay is 80% ($33.11) for the first 1040 hours.
ADVANCEMENT
Deckhands that meet Coast Guard time lines for license upgrades and pass all Coast Guard required tests typically work for Shaver approximately three to five years before being qualified to apply for the wheelhouse training program.
