We are seeking a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to provide expert orientation and mobility instruction to students with visual impairments. The COMS will help students develop the skills they need to travel safely and independently within the school, at home, and in the community. This role works closely with teachers, administrators, families, and related service providers to support individualized student goals.
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (O&M Specialists) are essential in helping visually impaired students build confidence, spatial awareness, safe travel skills, and independence through individualized instruction and collaboration.
Provide direct orientation and mobility instruction to students with visual impairments.
Conduct functional mobility assessments and develop individualized O&M plans aligned with student needs and goals (IEP/504 Plans).
Teach safe travel techniques, including white cane use, spatial awareness, auditory localization, street crossing, and community navigation .
Collaborate with special education staff, classroom teachers, and support teams to integrate O&M strategies into school routines.
Participate in IEP meetings and provide progress reports and recommendations.
Evaluate the school and community environment to ensure accessibility and safety .
Maintain accurate records and documentation of student progress in compliance with district and state requirements.
Provide training and guidance to staff, families, and caregivers on O&M strategies and best practices.
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential required (ACVREP or equivalent)
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, Vision Rehabilitation, or related field.
Experience working with students with visual impairments in educational settings preferred.
Strong knowledge of O&M techniques, adaptive technology, and travel skills instruction.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.
Ability to assess student needs and tailor instruction to individual goals.
