I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

GW Office of Animal Research seeks to hire a Temporary Animal Care Technician. The Temporary Animal Care Technician provides routine care over a group or groups of experimental animals in the Animal Research Facility, to include interacting with faculty, staff and students concerning the facility and experimental animals.

Job functions include:

- Feeding animals, maintaining animal space and lab equipment, and ensuring compliance with university, state and federal regulations.

- Ability to handle animals in a safe manner and to exercise basic principles of an animal care related to environmental control, disease control and sanitation.

- The Animal Care Technician shall maintain and conduct a daily inventory of animals.

- Observe and monitor the general health of the animals and report and record abnormalities.

- Prepare and provide animals with regular or specialist diets and water, as directed.

- Perform basic animal care following operations by administering medications and document records.

- Clean and sanitize animal rooms. Sterilize and sanitize equipment as needed.

- Assist in performing euthanasia and perform other special diagnostic tests.

- Screens and process incoming animals in accordance with regulations.

- Operate and provide basic maintenance to equipment associated with animal care and use.

- The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
